What started out as a hobby became a full blown music project during 2008. Guitar wizards Buddy and Ivory were jamming one day as they often did many times since they first met over thirty years ago. During one session, they had an idea to record some original music. They both had spent years in bands and had performed many songs by other artists and thought it might be time to do their own thing. It was a spur of the moment decision and really “nothing but a thang “you understand. Just a hobby.
That was until Buddy was laid off when the economy tanked and jobs were scarce.
Recording the drum tracks first in a local studio, the duo pieced together the music one track at a time by overdubbing each vocal, backup vocals, all guitar parts, bass, and keyboard parts to create ” Rough Cut”; an appropriate title as this was all done on a rough cut budget. The finished product was sent to a Las Vegas studio for professional mastering. With a little help from some musician friends, they put together music which unexpectedly attracted a wide variety of listeners and fans.
Buddy and Ivory both feel their music is unique in the sense that it incorporates a blend of collective experiences from many artists and genres to create a blend of these popular styles. As a result, Buddy Ivory has captured the imagination of people everywhere. In a very short period of time, they have thousands of Myspace fans and are selling the music in stores worldwide. As a result, with what started as a pastime has transformed itself into a serious music venture and taken on a life of its own.

These days everything old is new. Case in point is “Dime A Dozen” which was written decades ago and gets a makeover with 21st century flair.
Buddy ably demonstrates he’s a triple threat on this final track from the group’s debut CD ‘”Rough Cut” by singing lead, playing guitar and contributing a funky solo on bass. Go for it son! “Change of Direction” revives an old nugget by giving it a fresh coat of rock and roll Buddy Ivory style. Take Buddy’s emotionally twinged vocals, add some heavy-duty guitar work from Brian and Buddy, Dan’s keyboard fills and Steve’s intricate drumming and you’ve got another winner from Buddy Ivory’s debut CD “Rough Cut.”

For those having trouble getting attention from the opposite sex, Buddy offers some sound advice: “If you don’t get affection, just change your direction.” Nuff said.

Remember back in the day when instrumentals really had SOUL? Recapture those good times by digging “Nothing But A Thang” off Buddy Ivory’s debut CD “Rough Cut.” Dan’s masterful keyboard abilities take center stage in this track which evokes memories of Booker T & The MG’s.

Backed by Buddy’s guitar struts and Steve’s snare-bass drum groove, the boys deliver a tasty tune that’s ideally suited for a retro movie soundtrack. “Nothing But A Thang” proves more satisfying than a bowl of red beans and rice and sticks with you longer than a big slice of cornbread. So help yourself to a generous portion of Buddy Ivory’s soulful sound because they’ve got plenty to go around!

“Wait For Me” deals with some of the deadlines that often imposed in relationships. While love can sometimes be “too strong,” Brian cuts to the chase by singing “baby don’t wait for long.” Coming in just under three minutes, “Wait For Me” features an array of stellar performances.

Brian wrote the song and sings lead, setting up what’s to come early on with his “check this” phrase. Buddy demonstrates the versatility of his lead guitar with solos ranging from the melodic to down and dirty wailing. Spencer, meanwhile, shines on his bass runs as does Bob with his snappy cymbal work. Dan further enhances the Buddy Ivory sound by adding his keyboards to the mix.

Next up in our series focusing on Buddy Ivory’s debut CD is “Someday You’ll See” which is the longest track on “Rough Cut”, clocking at 5:12. Penned and sung by Buddy, “Someday You’ll See” looks back at love in bygone days where the object of his affection, he believes, will eventually regret the error of her ways.

“Someday You’ll See” ably demonstrates that there’s no substitute for experience and the song ends up turning into a guitar showcase, especially when Buddy’s melodic lead builds to a fever-pitch. This song also features some of Dan’s patented keyboard runs and Steve’s syncopated drum fills. Check it out!

“Alabama Fighting Men,” written by Buddy, was recorded two years ago and stashed for later use on Buddy Ivory’s debut CD, “Rough Cut.” This Southern Rock number deals with cheating, deceit and revenge in a Saturday night card game where Michael and Linda Sue, Brian expressively sings, were playin’ their friend Bobby “for a fool.” Ultimately the stage is set for “quite a fight.”

Helping build the momentum are Buddy’s stellar lead guitar work, Dan’s honky tonk piano coupled with the driving rhythms of Spencer’s bass and Bob’s drums. Download this track now to see how the story ends.

There’s something about a well-played keyboard that really brightens up a song no matter what genre of music. Case in point is “Organ Grinder” which prominently features Dan’s hot keyboard work that takes on a Boston-ish flavor. Sandwiched between Dan’s keyboard forays are some hot guitar licks from Buddy and Brian. When blended with Steve’s crunchy hi-hat and tom-tom fills, Buddy Ivory gives this boogie-woogie flavored tune some added spice.

“Organ Grinder” is the briefest cut on the CD, tracking in at 2:34. Back in the day this would have been an ideal length for a single on Top 40 radio playlists. Hopefully it will become one of your favorites. After finding his “Organ Grinder”, Brian sings “I want you for myself.” Can’t blame him there. Like many good things, it’s over before you know it. So play it again!

Next up in our series spotlighting songs from Buddy Ivory’s debut CD “Rough Cut” is “Pretty Faces” which revolves around the never ending quest to find a pretty face, which Brian sings, are usually found “in familiar places.” This rock gem, originally penned by Brian, has been updated with a heavier sound than the original.
“Pretty Faces” features a no holds barred approach encompassing Brian’s animated vocals, twin hard-edged guitars from Brian and Buddy backed by Steve’s high-powered drumming. Like the 8 other cuts, “Pretty Faces” has staying power. It’s hard to turn it off because one listen is just not enough. So put “Rough Cut” on your CD player and crank it up!

Many questions we have received always start with what style do you play. We are going to try to fill in the blanks on this one as we play what we call a multi-genre format. In today’s piece we are going to illustrate one of those styles.
Remember the ’70’s. Barry White.  A five-time a Grammy Award winner known for his rich bass voice and smooth image he captures the essence of sexuality in music. How many folks remember listening to his tunes on a date or in some romantic setting providing that mood?
Looking back, I remember fondly of those times and the songs that helped along the way.
